ver the past 30 years, Denison has made the transition from lectures to group seminars to personalized, almost graduate-style education. Our students are not passive learners – they are expected to articulate, critique, and imagine. They are confronted daily with the importance of taking responsibility for what they learn, of exploring, and even of occasionally stumbling. In particular, they are encouraged to be creators of knowledge, not just consumers of it. Our Summer Scholars Program, one of the most sophisticated programs of its kind in the nation, increases opportunities for independent student scholarship. Our young scholars' research – which ranges from studies of national social justice issues to biodiversity in the Granville area to Tajikistan's transition to a market economy – is remarkable for its range, depth, and impact.
